Century Square
Commercial Office Space
The third and final Square, Century Square fronts the Grand Canal at Century City and overlooks 16 hectares of wetlands and Intaka Bird Island. It comprises of 10 000m2 of office and loft units around the 2 000m2 internal courtyard.
The idea behind Roland, Century and Westlake Squares, was to develop urban work-live buildings with more connection between people. Shops, offices and lofts were arranged to strengthen community. The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate with strong summer wind.
We believed that small businesses would be best organized as a community by sharing front doors onto a large central, sheltered communal square or courtyard.
“So every tenant and visitor can see the front door and name of every business that is present in the square and people movement to and from each business is as interactive as possible. Visibility and human engagement then stimulate a collective culture and a sense of place.”
Roger Harries
Squares have a coffee shop and boutique retail components to compliment the business precinct. Features of the “Square” concept are strong business branding, maximum natural light and ventilation and parking proximity to front doors.
The squares were designed to deliver convenience with all units allocated some courtyard parking bays while the balance are located in the parking garage one floor below. Ample staircases are positioned to enable quick unit, courtyard and parking access.
